Becoming a firefighter at West Deptford Fire Department has changed the lives of many volunteers. If you’re looking for a positive way to spend time or want to start training for a career in the emergency-services field, joining West Deptford Fire Department as a volunteer is the perfect New Year’s resolution for you. “You don’t need any prior experience to join. We provide all our volunteers with the training and equipment they need to be a successful member of our team,” said Rick Harris, Fire Administrator.
At West Deptford Fire Department, extra hands are always needed and we are looking for volunteers ages 14 and older in the following positions:
- Explorer/Junior firefighters. Explorers, ages 14-15, learn firefighting techniques and skills, and participate in drill nights. Juniors, ages 16-17, go on fire calls, but may not enter burning buildings. Juniors assist with groundwork and prepare to become active firefighters when they turn 18.
- Firefighter. Active firefighters encounter a broad range of fire calls from businesses, industrial parks and homes in West Deptford and neighboring towns. They utilize up-to-date equipment and best techniques to protect the community.
- Fire Police. Fire police direct traffic and crowds to ensure the safety of the public and firefighters during emergency scenes or community events.
“Our fire department receives a variety of different calls ranging from house fires to vehicle extrication to water rescue,” said Harris, “We are always ready to respond.”
West Deptford firefighters receive local and state-certified training and learn life-saving techniques. Volunteers also master invaluable skills in communication, problem solving and leadership.
