Volunteer Profile: Harold Pierce

Harold Pierce, volunteer with West Deptford Fire Department for over 55 years, currently serves as the department’s chaplain, a certified clergy member who provides spiritual care for individuals in a non-religious organization.

“I know what these guys face each day.  To fight fires you must be prepared, heart, body and soul,” said Harold. “I care for the fire fighters who are active and on duty and I caution them to be careful.”

“Being a volunteer consists of giving of yourself at any hour and at a moment’s notice to answer a call. My firefighting journey began 55 years ago.” said Harold. “I helplessly watched 3 small children perish in a house fire. It was at that moment that I felt my calling to make a difference. The reward is knowing that you helped and made a difference in someone’s life. It’s a feeling of pride to know you answered the call for your community and its people.”

As an active member of the church for over 60 years, Harold got his start at Pitman Gospel Ministry. For over 40 years he had served in the gospel, veteran home, nursing home and prison ministries.

“My work as a clergyman never interfered with volunteering at the fire department,” said Harold. “The department understands it’s a volunteer position, not full time. I make myself available as much as possible.”

On top of volunteering with the fire department and church, Harold worked at West Deptford township for 39 years. He started as a laborer and worked his way up to public works manager. Now retired, he continues to volunteer at the fire department.

“My favorite part is just being in the building with the other members,” said Harold. “I enjoy being in their presence and offering help whenever I can.”

Although Harold doesn’t fight fires like he used to, he visits the station every morning to join in the comradery and act as a mentor for newer members.
